A Global Leader in Art and Design Education

Awards cannot be deferred to the next year due to outstanding applications or multiple awards. If an applicant has been previously awarded a Center for Craft grant but did not complete the project or is still in the progress of completing the project they are not eligible to apply. Each year the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship awards $15,000 to 10 undergraduate seniors across the United States who demonstrate exemplary skill in craft - one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. What we realized is that many of the questions we ask today about craft have been answered in different ways by the generations before us in the pages of Craft Horizons.

Design Your Creative Future at ArtCenter

Each year, the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship identifies ten graduating college seniors with exemplary skill in craft. Awardees receive $15,000 — one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we created a new grant program to help support resilience in craft and community—to ensure a future for craft.

Current Projects

In August 2013, a generous gift from the Windgate Foundation allowed the Center to purchase our historic 1912 building to demonstrate how and why craft matters. To maximize the gift’s impact we have developed a property development plan to elevate craft and other creative disciplines. Prior to the Chicago 2003 SOFA exhibition, a group of craft leaders met to discuss the creation of an inventory of craft in museum collections. This was a component of one of four initiatives identified during the 2002 North Carolina Summit Retreat on Craft charged with identifying initiatives that will advance craft in academia and the curatorial worlds. Jason’s work, commitment, and career success demonstrate the power of investing in emerging artists through impactful programs like the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship.

African-American textile and fiber artists and designers have been underrepresented despite their many contributions to textile design history. This research project will highlight their important contributions from 1800 to 1909. The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design advances the understanding of craft by encouraging and supporting research, critical dialogue, and professional development in the United States.

The Craft Research Fund program is administered by the Center for Craft and supported by the Windgate Foundation.

Submitting an application does not constitute a promise or guarantee of being awarded a fellowship. After that students do a second pass of the assignment and submit their final draft by the end of the week. They’ll receive a recorded video of the instructor’s critique on that which is very detailed. So after each lesson the students complete a first pass of the assignment and submit it to their mentor for feedback. The diploma programs last ten months and are divided into three periods with breaks in between. Even if students take courses solo they’ll have opportunities to interact with other students, so they get the best of both worlds!

Center for Craft supports the launch of the Journal of Modern Craft, the first peer-reviewed academic journal to provide an interdisciplinary and international forum in its subject area. Center for Craft awards the first ten Windgate Fellowships, providing $15,000 to ten undergraduate students annually. Center for Craft is established as an inter-institutional, public service center of the University of North Carolina (UNC) by the Board of Governors and General Assembly in May, 1996.

Yet there’s also a clear learning structure that helps students understand deadlines and project requirements. You can fill out a FAFSA like you would for any other accredited school to apply for grants, loans, and work study positions. But it’s worth looking into the others if you want to learn 3D work or get into movies vs video games. Some concept artists are self-taught, but many find that it’s more efficient to learn from someone else who has already mastered the art.

The magazine became a space (perhaps the space) where everyone – critics, craftspeople, readers – weighed in on the field. Collaborative coworking space, lecture hall, classrooms and conference rooms to incubate and grow creative ideas, businesses, organizations and projects. Study commissioned by Handmade in America recommends a new organization to integrate craft, craft history, and craft criticism into education at the college level. Our work is concentrated on the most creative and original artists and ambitious research in order to fortify the field with rigorous standards of making and intellectual inquiry.

The Craft Research Fund was created to encourage, expand and support scholarly craft research in the United States. Grants up to $15,000 will be awarded to support exhibition research relating to the goals of the Craft Research Fund. Awards of up to $15,000 granted to two interdisciplinary teams of researchers, encouraging mutually beneficial innovation between the fields of craft and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Craft has the capacity to connect us to each other, to ground us in a specific place, and to bridge generations across time. Connections in the Making features works by regional artists, craftspeople, and entrepreneurs that tell different stories about the ways craft connects us. At locations in or near the Moss Arts Center, the public will have an opportunity completely free of charge to engage with the university's newest creative and innovative efforts.

If becoming a professional concept artist is your life’s dream, or if you’re just starting to look into career options, you’ve probably considered art school. The Center for Craft is committed to diversifying our audiences and to providing equitable and accessible programming - in order to do so, we need to know who our audiences are. Additionally, many of our funders ask that we report on the demographics of our audiences. Please note that the data from the demographics section will only be used anonymously for grant wiring and reporting.

For over 25 years, the Center for Craft has been at the vanguard of the craft movement, advancing the understanding, prominence, and historical significance of craft, and identifying and cultivating the next great researchers and artists in the field. Now, the Center is building on this remarkable foundation through a realigned strategic plan, Craft Matters. Focused on activating resources, catalyzing craft communities, and amplifying craft’s impact, Craft Matters will not only shape the Center’s direction for the next five years, but will have far-ranging influence.

The application fee must also be paid at the time of submitting your application as you will not be able to log-in again to access the payment page again. Please provide a list of at least 10 sources that you will utilize in your research. This may include a list of books, articles, journals, websites, catalogs, and or other publications. The Center for Craft reserves the right to limit support of a project to a particular portion(s) or cost(s). Recipients will acknowledge support from the Center for Craft by including the tag "This research was supported by a Center for Craft Research Fund" in any publications or presentations resulting from the grant.

Center for Craft evolves strategic direction to explore how and why craft matters. Craft Matters is focused on activating resources, catalyzing craft communities, and amplifying craft’s impact. This year, the Craft Research Fund Awards $70,000 to 9 scholars, artist-researchers, organizations, and institutions in support of research-driven craft publications, exhibitions, and projects in the U.S. Alumni currently work in companies such as Dreamworks and Arkane Studios, and were concept artists on projects like Ghost in the Shell, Call of Duty, Red Sparrow, Star Wars Battlefront, and many others. However, a lot of working artists in the field have a degree in a relevant field like fine arts, illustration, graphic design, or film. Some studios will specifically look for potential hires with degrees, and others won’t care.

FZD requires a portfolio, an interview process, professional recommendation letters, a test, and applicants are required to be deemed mentally and physically well enough to attempt the program. That’s an insane number compared to most other higher education programs. Accreditation statuses and requirements change, so if you are concerned about your credits or degree being recognized by other schools makes sure to check with each school’s admissions office. No, once your application is submitted, you will not be able to return to the form or change any submitted information.

The university and local communities are invited to discover recent projects and innovative solutions at the Virginia Tech Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) Creativity + Innovation Day 2024 on April 29. Although these courses aren’t fully self-paced, the lectures and projects can be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection and they can be completed on your own time. Most instructor/mentor(same thing) critiques include recorded videos of the instructor fixing the student’s working file.
